he Town of Magog has finally awarded a contract for initial estimate of the proposed new fire station to be built on the corner of Sherbrooke St. and Principale East.

Council granted the construction company Guy Sébas the contract to build the future station at Monday’s regular meeting. Construction Sébas filed the lowest of three bids submitted to the City as part of a tender for the project.

Sébas will receive $5,853,000 to build the new barracks. The municipality will provide the bulk of this amount, but $1,093,000 will be covered by the Estrie Ambulance Workers Cooperative.

By participating financially in the project, the Ambulance Workers Cooperative is making sure that it can use part of the premises and that ambulance workers will be able to rest and eat on site between calls.

Initially, the City had estimated the cost of building the new barracks at approximately $5.8 million, which corresponds precisely to what the municipality has accepted.

On the other hand, after a previous call for tenders, the town council had had a rude awakening when it realized that the lowest bid was exceeded its estimate. It then chose to begin the process all over again.

It should be noted that part of the fire department has been temporarily relocated to a municipal building at 520 Saint-luc St, until the future building is ready.

To reduce the cost of the project, the City could have reviewed the plans designed by the architects to make significant changes. But it seems that this was not necessary.

Before the construction of the new building can begin, the one currently attached to Magog Town Hall will be demolished. The planned demolition will be carried out in the very short term, according to the available information.

The City has already carried out work in the other two fire stations that the municipality owns as the year 2026 posed significant challenges in 2016 and its modus operandi was significantly revised.
