Sherbrooke police involved in weekend shooting
A32-year-old man was shot by the Sherbrooke police Saturday afternoon on Brunelle St. in the Saintélie area after he lunged at police with a knife in his hand. He was taken down by an officer with his service weapon.
The man was wounded and taken to hospital where officials do not fear for his life. The Independent Investigations Bureau (BEI) has taken charge of the investigation.
According to the BEI, the SPS received a call at around 2:45 p.m. about a man in crisis inside his home. Two officers went to the scene and, upon their arrival, the man emerged from the house armed with a knife.
Seven BEI investigators have been tasked with investigating the incident and the BEI is asking anyone who witnessed this incident to contact them via their website at www.bei.gouv.qc.ca.
In accordance with the Independent Investigations Bureau Rules of Procedure, the BEI called in the SQ to act as investigating police. The SQ will provide two forensic identification technicians working under the supervision of EIB investigators.
The mandate of the Office of Independent Investigations is to investigate, at the request of the Minister of Public Safety, cases where a person other than a police officer on duty dies or is seriously injured by a firearm used by a police officer during a police intervention, or while being detained by a police force.
