Simple tips to help strengthen your child’s math and reading skills

-

(NC) As a new school season begins, it’s important for both parents and children to feel confident and prepared - especially when it comes to subjects like reading and math. “Building children’s confidence helps with problem-solving and advancement,” says Dominique Ciccarelli, an Education Specialist at Kumon North America. Dominique recommends following these simple tips at home to help your child progress with confidence:

1. Take it one step at a time - We often become overwhelmed by the ‘big picture’. Encourage your child to understand the question before attempting a solution. Review the problem and ask your child what they are meant to solve. By talking it through, and going step-bystep, you’ll help build an understanding of the problem at hand, and the solution.

2. Make it relatable - Applying real world examples to learning makes it easier for your child to grasp different concepts. Whether it’s counting fruit at the supermarket or building sentences to describe their favourite toys, these scenarios will be top of mind as they practice and learn.

3. Celebrate the little wins - Don’t forget to celebrate when those small goals are reached along the way! By doing this, you are able to keep kids more interested, engaged, and focused on the end goal. Whether it’s a pizza party or a sticker chart, those rewarding moments can go a long way in motivating your child to stay on track.

4. Try an after school program - Programs like Kumon help build the skills needed to improve your child’s academic ability, teaching them how to learn independently and solve problems on their own. Whether it’s math or reading, they’ll gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.
