Magog rejects Plage des Cantons Divertigo placement

-

Following the submission of a preliminary park management plan report, Magog Mayor Vicki-may Hamm has indicated that the Divertigo aerial play park will not be installed at the Plage des Cantons, although other sites are being studied. In any event, the project will not be completed in 2018.

According to Hamm, the consultations, the recommendations of the professionals, and public input indicate that a project like Divertigo has no place on the beach. “It is understood, however, that the project is still interesting for the city, but we have to find the appropriate location. We are looking at other locations, but this can’t be done in the short term,” she says.

In spite of the controversy and divisiveness engendered in the population, Hamm says the debate has enabled the City of Magog to take a step backwards to get an overall view of the development of the Parc de la Baie-de-magog. “At the time, we thought we were seizing an opportunity and we were not expecting so much opposition. It allowed us to look at what we currently have, what we want to conserve, and what we want to develop in the long term,” she continued.

Hamm concludes by adding that it is a matter of finding a balance in order to please a majority of people. “It is clear that we can’t please everyone, but we want to seek as much consensus as possible. To do this, we must offer freer and more contemplative activities at the Plage des Cantons and more intensive activities for the whole family in more favourable places.
