Upcoming Health Link sessions in Bury – Save the dates!

-

Following upon the success of last year’s sessions, three new Health Link activities are in the works for this fall. These lunch-and-learn sessions, which connect the English-speaking community in the Haut-saint-françois region with health and wellness information in English, will take place at the Armoury Community Centre in Bury (563 Main) on Wednesdays on September 20, October 18 and November 22.

Details on the session topics will be shared with you in the coming weeks, but mark these dates down in your calendar now so you can join us and discover services and health professionals that can help you meet your health and social service needs!

Health Link will take a break between December and February, but will return in the spring, with sessions scheduled for March, April, and May. Information will be posted in the new year.

Each Health Link session includes a delicious lunch, served between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and a presentation by a featured speaker, which begins at 1 p.m.. Donations of $5 are requested to cover the meal and the funds help us ensure that we can continue to offer these sessions.

Community members are welcome to join us for only the speaker’s presentation if they’d prefer. To sign up for any of the upcoming sessions right away, please contact Kim Fessenden at 819-8723771, ext. 2, and let her know if you’ll be joining us for lunch, the presentation, or both.

Health Link is a collaboration between The Eaton Valley Community Learning Centre, the CIUSSS de l’estrie – CHUS’S Haut-saint-françois RLS, the Centre d’action Bénévole du Haut-saintfrançois, and Townshippers’ Association. It is a CHSSN initiative funded by Health Canada through the Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013-2018: Education, Immigration, Communities.

New Community Health Education Program (CHEP) Videoconferences on

the Horizon Townshippers’ is pleased to announce the return of the Community Health Education program (CHEP). Seeking to increase the availability of health promotion and disease prevention information for English-speaking communities and to increase collaboration between the community and public health professionals, this dynamic program helps bring distance learning in English to remote, rural or dispersed Quebec communities via videoconferencing, DVDS and follow-up activities on topics touching health and social services.

The next CHEP presenter will be physiotherapist Myra Siminovitch. A popular and frequent return presenter with a special interest in arthritis and osteoporosis, Myra has been involved in research concerning treatment outcomes, and she continues to work with people of all ages who are affected by osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture (broken bones), particularly of the hip, spine, wrist, and shoulder, according to www.osteoporosis.ca.

Often known as “the silent thief” because bone loss occurs without symptoms, it is sometimes confused with similarly named osteoarthritis, however, osteoporosis is a bone disease; osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints and surrounding tissue.

One in three women and one in five men will suffer from an osteoporotic fracture during their lifetime. Fractures from osteoporosis are more common than heart attacks, strokes, and breast cancer combined.

Join Townshippers’ at the Richmond and Region Community Learning Centre, located in the Richmond Regional High School, 375 Armstrong, on Wednesday, September 20, from 10 am to 12 pm, to find out more about this disease, which weakens bones and makes them more likely to break. Come and learn about the signs and symptoms of osteoporosis, and the treatment, support, and resources that are available.

Watch for upcoming CHEP sessions on topics such as Demystifying the Emergency Room Visit, scheduled for October 18, and The Changing Role of the Pharmacist, for November 15,
