Exciting 75th year for Missisquoi Community School

- By Louise Smith

This September marks the 75th session of the Missisquoi Community School which will be held in Heroes’ Memorial School on rue Sud in Cowansville. It will run for 10 weeks for the low, low price of $10!

Thursday, September 28, at 7 p.m. will be the second night. Classes begin at 7:30 and go until 9 p.m. Each evening ends with a social half-hour down in the cafeteria. November 16 there will be no class. The last evening will be November 30.

Anniversary mugs and bags are available for $6. It’s a great souvenir of this special year.

A full list of courses is available on Facebook, the Missisquoi Community School page. The mission of the school is to emphasize human interactions. Over 300 people took courses last year. Students have to be 16 or older. This year an instructor is sixteen! Jayden Perry will run a course called “Joining the Social Media.” He will be leading people on their phones, tablets, or laptops, to make them comfortable in all the available possibilities with their devices.

The line dancing class led by Joanne Rudd and Pascal Brunelle is one of the largest in the Townships, boasting 75 students last year! Another “movement” class is led by Tammy Drew, who will teach aerobics set to the music of “Country Heat.”

In these troubling times, Charles Riordon’s class on Global Warming and Climate Change and what we can do to

make changes, will be very relevant. When it comes to health issues, Barbara Jack will have a series of guest speakers on various topics during the 10 weeks, including Alzheimer’s, Mental Health, Heart and Stroke, Healthy Eyes, Stroke Rehabilitation, DNR, and palliative care. Layla Marcotte will lead a class called “Jog Your Mind,” which will deal with memory loss and normal ageing and how to stimulate your mind.

In the craft sections there are courses on crocheting and knitting, quilting, acrylic painting, and stained glass making.

Bridge will be offered at two levels, beginner and advanced. Other card games will be taught in a different class. Chess will be offered, as will creative writing and storytelling.

If history tickles your fancy, there is both local and world history. To round out the other choices, there is digital photography, French conversation, guitar, observing your forest, stargazing, and a human approach to money and strategic investing and managing your money.

There is bound to be something that you will find of interest. Carpool and Susan Dover’s quilting students have amazing results at the end of 10 weeks.

bring a buddy to try out a new adventure!
