Saint Michel celebrates centennial Saturday
The Cathedral Basilica Saint Michel is celebrating its centennial anniversary this Saturday and will be holding a commemorative celebration in the Pauline Chapel this Saturday, September 30. On that date in 1917, the faithful gathered for the first time at the Saint-michel cathedral in Sherbrooke and despite the fact that the structure still had a dirt floor, the organ was still in storage, and the steeple had yet to be erected, Bishop Paul Larocque was proud to be able to celebrate a first Mass there. A hundred years later, the site remains a gathering place for the community.
The Cathedral Basilica Saint-michel is a major landmark in Sherbrooke and part of Sherbrooke’s panorama, attracting many visitors each year. As part of the Journées de la Culture, the Regroupement des Archives of the Séminaire de Sherbrooke and the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke (RASSAS) is inviting the public to participate in a commemorative celebration of this centenary in the Pauline chapel (1917-2017) and 60th Anniversary of the Blessing of the Basilica-cathedral (1957-2017) as we know it today. The event will take place at the same place where the story had begun 100 years earlier, on September 30, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the cathedral\s Salle Saint-michel (accessible via 188 Marquette).
The event will include the book launch of ‘La Basilique-cathédrale Saintmichel de Sherbrooke.’
