Wales Home News October 2017

-

October was a month of transition around the home. We watched as the leaves changed around the building, as the decorations for Thanksgiving and Halloween went up, and some employees changed offices and work locations as our front of house renovation neared completion.

On the afternoon of the 7th, over a hundred people who had received a special invitation received a tour at the ribbon cutting of our front of house renovations which include a therapeutic pool, new therapy department, offices, a board room and training center, resident lounge, dining spaces and modernized shipping and receiving and waste management center. On the 10th, employees were given the guided tour and on the 11th, residents had the chance to see the outcome of all the construction that has been taking place over the last year.

A shoe sale was held on the 2nd in the main living room. On the 3rd, Donna and Sidney Mills and friends joined residents in the living room for a happy hour which also included an opportunity for dancing on our new floors. On the 5th, residents and drivers went to the Ben & Florentine Restaurant in Sherbrooke and enjoyed the fall foliage along the way. Jim and Sherry gave a beautiful musical concert for residents in the living room on the afternoon of the 12th. William Nolan (Patrick, our head of maintenance’s son) held a bake sale in the living room on the afternoon of the 14th to raise money for his college German emersion course. Sandra Lester, Audrey Gunter and friends joined residents in the living room on the afternoon of the 16th to do a Thanksgiving craft. This month our feature movie (episodes of Red Green) was held on the evening of the 16th on two large screens in the living room. Cheryl Coates held a Tocara jewellery sale in the living room on the afternoon of the 19th. A Girl Guide cookie sale was held in the living room on the afternoon of the 21st. Jennifer Brown also gave a presentation of some of her beautiful photographs from the area during the sale.

A conference by Professor Suzanne Houde from Bishop’s University on healthy living took place in the living room on the afternoon of the 23rd. The Roxton Singers entertained residents on the evening of the 23rd. A special Thanksgiving nursing care units’ tea took place on the afternoon of the 25th. There was zootherapy in the nursing care units on the morning of the 26th.

This month’s birthday party was held on the 4th floor on the afternoon of the 18th. Our hosts were Group 92. Happy birthday to all those who celebrated and a HUGE thank you to the volunteers.

Welcome to Lloyd Wintle, Carole Driver, Winnifred St-laurent, Gordon Morrill, and Charlie and Heather Goodfellow who moved in this month. Also welcome to Maureen Quinn who is joining us for a while. Our sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Gillian Martin and Delmar White. Dorothy Cassidy’s memorial service was held in the living room on the afternoon of the 28th.

Hatley-stanstead Women’s Institute October meeting

The October meeting of the Hatley-stanstead W.I. took place at the Beulah United Church on October 5 with 9 members present.

Barbara Hewitt, branch president, welcomed everyone to the meeting and members recited the Mary Stewart Collect.

Motto for the month is - The most common and cheapest of all pleasurers is conversation. Call a friend.

Roll Call was what is your birth stone and the flower of your birth month.

Elaine Stone read the minutes from the September meeting. Vesseys Seeds orders for the branch fundraiser were brought in. The branch members wish to participate in the Christmas Village. This was discussed more at the county meeting following this meeting as it is a county project.

Phyllis Dustin presented the Treasurer’s report which was accepted as read. Donations for 2017 will be given to Hoodless Homestead, Coins for Friendships, QWI Cairn, and the International Peace Garden.

A thank you was read from the ACES breakfast program for the donation given to the program.

Rev. Doreen Moffat reported that she had sent a card to Gertrude Ketcham who is now at the Stanstead Manoir. Dyanne Saanum and Phyllis Dustin visited Gertrude after she moved and took her a beautiful plant on behalf of Stanstead County W.I. During the meeting a sympathy card was signed by those present for the family of the late Joan Morrison who was at one time Richmond W.I. County President.

Barbara thanked the members for the food for the county luncheon held following this meeting. The meeting was closed and members prepared for the county meeting and a presentation by Debbie Mosher Roy.
