Danville Legion honours their veterans
The Danville Royal Canadian Legion Branch 41, joined by Richmond Branch 15 turned out for the annual Remembrance ceremony Saturday with prayers and the Roll call for absent veterans. The Danville Branch numbers have dwindled over time and Richmond's Branch 15 is traditionally on hand to bring the ceremonial touch to Remembrance ceremonies including Last Post and Reveille. Wreaths sponsored by local agencies, local organisations, enterprise, and folks who wished to continue to honour their family members and friends who never returned were placed near the cenotaph.
Later at the former Legion Hall a special ceremony was held honouring the Richmond Branch 15. A generous cheque was presented by the Danville legion to the Richmond Branch as a token of appreciation of their collaboration through the years. Proud members gathered for an official photograph marking this momentous occasion.
Richmond's Branch 15 will turn out for Remembrance ceremonies at St Francis School here November 9, first on the
morning schedule. Later, at 1:30 p.m. ceremonies are slated at the monument in South Durham where, among other dignitaries, the local francophone Ecole Primaire bundle up their students who usually have prepared a wreath or wreaths themselves. At this school, Remembrance Day is an important event and the history of the wars and the ultimate sacrifice, so many made, makes this outing a serious contemplation of what they have learned in their classes.
November 11th is also a busy day with legionnaires turning out for traditional ceremonies at the Foyer Wales Home with ceremonies beginning precisely at 11 a.m. This is also Veterans' banquet evening when veterans, family and friends of veterans gather to remember their comrades.
Sunday, November 12th is Armistice Parade Day mustering at the legion hall on College Street, the parade is scheduled to arrive at Memorial park at 2 p.m. where a guard of honour will be in place, and last post and Reveille will echo across the St Francis once again. Wreaths and crosses will be placed on the cenotaph by participants from local organizations and schools, deputies, mayors and dignitaries.
The final outing for the Richmond Branch is November 15th at Richmond Regional high school. Students and teachers here have traditionally written and produced short plays and dramas, always with the underlying theme of the effect of war both at home and abroad, on families and friends.
