Cowansville Remembrance Day parade - important event to ponder

- By Louise Smith

The Remembrance Day parade is usually held on the Sunday prior to Remembrance Day, but with Remembrance Day being on Saturday, it was held on November 11.

The day was sunny but cold. There were more participants in the parade this year with the addition of the Many wreathes and crosses were laid on the cenotaph outside the legion.

Farnham Army Cadets and band to the regular parade marchers.

Leading the parade was a piper in his full regalia. Following him were two representatives of the RCMP. The colour party carried the flags of Quebec, Canada, and the legion. Members of the legion followed the flags. Behind them were the Air Cadets from Massey-vanier and the Army Cadets from Farnham. Heading up the rear were members from the Cowansville Lions’ Club with their flag.

There were more spectators this year, but still not enough for such an important event. Perhaps the parade route could extend to part of either rue Sud or rue Principale to give it more emphasis in the town.

After the parade the Act of Remembrance was read in English and in French. Wreaths and crosses were placed by family members and business representatives in the area. Names of those who died in service in World Wars I and II, and Korea, peace missions, and Afghanistan were read out.

It was followed by a light lunch inside the legion.
