Preparing for winter with Health Link
The snow has started to fly, and it probably has you thinking about whether you are ready to face the coming winter months. There are always so many things to think about in the wintertime, like snowstorms (and ice storms!), power outages, winter driving, heating, and shovelling. Plus, you also need to be sure you have enough food and supplies at home to last you for a few days in case you get snowed in… and, it’s always good to know of a few activities or social outings you can participate in to help keep the “winter blues” at bay when the days are short and cold. Phew.
If this list seems daunting, don’t worry, you are not alone. If you live in the Haut-saint-françois (HSF) region (which includes Cookshire-eaton, Eastangus, and Bury) we’ve got you covered with a special Health Link on winter preparedness, hosted in Cookshire on Thursday, December 7. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the new seniors’ residence, Manoir de l’eau Vive (210 Principale Est, 2nd floor community hall), you’ll get tips on staying safe and healthy this winter, learn about free activities happening in the area during the winter months, and have a chance to enjoy a delicious meal for only $5 and meet new people.
A variety of local community organizations will also be there to share information about their services. Following mini-presentations by these organizations, guests will be invited to stay for a delicious lunch prepared by the Manoir’s talented chef, and have a chance to visit the residence and learn about its many services.
After lunch, Jessica Marais, a local ethnobotanist and accredited herbalist, will talk about the many natural ways we can stay healthy and enjoy the winter. Jessica will offer interesting tips and her passion will surely inspire you to see nature in a different light.

All are welcome to this event, but please note the services presented during the day will be from the HSF region. Participants may also attend the presentations free of charge should they not wish to purchase lunch.
Health Link is a series of English-language health and wellness sessions connecting HSF region residents to information, services, and professionals that can help them to meet their health and social service needs.
Health Link is a collaboration between the Eaton Valley Community Learning Centre, the CIUSSS de l’estrie – CHUS’S Haut-saint-françois RLS, the Centre d’action Bénévole du Haut-saintfrançois, and Townshippers’ Association. It is a CHSSN initiative funded by Health Canada through the Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013-2018: Education, Immigration, Communities. Encouraging youth to just DO-ET!
Townshippers’ Rooted in the Townships project is hitting the ground running with three career and skills days touring each of the region’s three regional English-language high schools. Under the title
Unlock your Future: Discover Opportunities in the Eastern Townships (DO-ET)
the tour will make its first stop at Massey-vanier High School on November 22, visit Richmond Regional High School on December 6, then make its final stop at Alexander Galt Regional High School on January 17.
Held in collaboration with the Eastern Townships School Board (ETSB), community organizations, post-secondary educational institutions, and regional employers and professionals, the DO-ET tour from Townshippers’ will give secondary 4 and 5 students a day of dynamic skill-building and career exploration.
Students will have the occasion to meet with local employers and participate in networking activities to learn about the local employment market, available opportunities and resources, and how planning a career in the Townships can lead to success. They will also join in skill-building workshops that cover topics like entrepreneurship, loans and bursaries, job applications, interview preparation, healthy habits and time management, and more!
The goal is to give our English-speaking high schoolers the tools and support they need to build their future in the region.
Participating students will have the chance to win prizes donated by the project partners, including a grand prize, generously donated by Global Excel Management, of two hockey tickets to see the Montreal Canadian versus the Anaheim Ducks on February 3.
