Successful wrap up to Missisquoi Community School’s 75th year

- By Louise Smith

It was in September 1943 that Rev. John Oswald Peacock started the Missisquoi Community School. It was first held in the Anglican Hall on rue Principale (the building is no longer standing). In its second year it moved to the Bruck House. In 1953 it moved to Heroes’ Memorial School and it has been there every year since. The Missisquoi Community School is the oldest community school in the province!

Last Thursday, the 75th year wrapped up. Tables were set up to show off completed projects from various classes. President David Warner had to end up using a megaphone (old technology!) as the sound system had some initial glitches. Performing that evening were the many members of the guitar class under the direction of Martha Lickfold and Frankie Green, two members of the creative writing class, and then numerous line dancing members under the direction of Joanne Rudd and Pascal Brunelle. Then it was down to the cafeteria for a special social hour with good food and laughter to end another satisfying year.

It was a special treat to have John Hodge in attendance. He was a long serving member of the school’s executive. Health issues prevented him from holding his course this year. Many people came to see him in the social hour following the presentation in the gym.

The school will be up and running again next September. As long as you are 16 years old, you can attend. This past year, Jayden Perry was the youngest teacher ever in the school’s history. He was 16! His course was “Joining the Social Media.”

The school has a web page, Missisquoi Community School.
