Windsor abolishes Library membership fees for residents

- Record Staff

The City of Windsor has confirmed that, as of January 1, 2018, free memberships to the Patrick-dignan Municipal Library will be on offer to residents and those of municipalities covered by the service agreement among the municipalities of Saint-françoisxavier-de-brompton and Val-joli.

"The City of Windsor encourages reading and education, and free library membership is an incentive,” says Windsor Mayor Sylvie Bureau. “Therefore, we met with the neighboring municipalities to compensate for the loss of income related to subscriptions. Each municipality will pay its fair share to enable its citizens to benefit from the services of the library."

Subscription fees will continue to be charged to non-residents and late fees for certain types of documents (from $ 0.10 to $ 0.25) and booking fees (from $ 0.25 to $ 0.50), among others, have been revised. Among the novelties for 2018, the library will have a free Wi-fi network for visitors.

"Every year, the Windsor Library tops the list in all categories among Estrie public libraries. Citizens of Richmond, Asbestos and Sherbrooke come to our library because the services we offer are excellent in terms of available documents as well as in the services themselves. We want to continue in this direction," Bureau adds.

The Ministry of Culture and Communications will continue to contribute towards the purchase of books and the City of Windsor has always been committed to investing at least the equivalent. The Library currently invests more than $60,000 in books and documents each year.

Concerning the expansion of the Patrick-dignan Library, the City has submitted a first draft of the project to the ministry. Architectural evaluations will be done within the next months so that the process can continue.
