Wales Home News November 2017
The entire month of November was busy throughout the Home. In addition to our regular monthly activities which include bingos, exercise classes, yoga sessions, card games, Friday teas and church services, here are some of our highlights. The Home was also decorated for Remembrance Day at the beginning of the month and once those decorations came down, the Christmas decorations began appearing throughout the Home.
On the 1st, residents had the opportunity to see a comedy show on User’s Rights in the main living room. The show has been shown in towns and cities throughout Quebec in both English and French. A magnetic jewellery sale was held in the living room on the 2nd.
On the 3rd, the Wales Home Foundation’s 6th Annual Candlelight Evening of Memories was held in the main living room. The goal this year had been to light 1200 candles. In the end, a record breaking number of candles was lit (1314). During the evening, musical entertainment was provided by Mireille Pruneau, the names of those who had candles lit in their memories were read, and special candles were lit for the Wales Home’s founder, Mr. Horace P. Wales, and also for those affected by natural disasters in this past year. Punch was also served, and visitors had the opportunity to see the renovations which have been made to the living room and front of house.
The World Vision Silent Auction was set up in the main living room on the 6th and ran until the 16th. A resident and family meeting was held on the 7th in the main living room. Pierre Gravel entertained residents in the main living room on the afternoon of the 9th with beautiful melodies in English, French and Spanish.
Boutique Diane held a clothing sale in the living room on the 4th. Municipal voting for Cleveland took place in the Shaw 1 solarium on the 5th.
Our annual Remembrance Day ceremony with the collaboration of Legion Branch #15 was held on the morning of the 11th in the main living room. This special celebration honoured the veterans who currently live at Résidence Wales Home and CHSLD Wales Inc. and was an opportunity for all in attendance to remember the veterans in their lives.
On the afternoon of the 13th, volunteers came to the main living room to help residents made a snowman craft. Residents and their drivers had a shopping excursion and lunch outing on the 14th. On the afternoon of the 14th, the Wales Home Knitters hosted a knitter’s sale with the profits being donated to The Wales Home Foundation.
The November Birthday Party took place on the 4th floor on the 15th. Thank you to the Richmond Young Women’s Institute for hosting the party and happy birthday to everyone who celebrated. On the afternoon of the 25th, John Mcelreavy’s family hosted a birthday party for him in the main living room. On the afternoon of the 16th, Elaine Cooper gave an educational workshop on her aeroponic vertical tower Garden System in the main living room, allowing residents to see how fruits and vegetables are grown using it.
On the afternoon of the 18th, the main living room at the Wales Home was filled with anticipation as Jordan Arshinoff Foss, Foundation campaign chairman announced a multi-milliondollar fundraising campaign, which is our largest to date. Upcoming renovations were also announced and a groundbreaking ceremony for the CHSLD expansion took place. There was also music by Isabelle Gosselin, refreshments and a chance for everyone to visit and enjoy the afternoon.
A Christmas tea in the nursing care units took place on the afternoon of the 22nd. Zootherapy on the nursing care units took place on the morning of the 23rd. Everyone enjoyed a visit from our furry and feathered friends. On the afternoon of the 23rd, a special ceremony was held in the living room to celebrate the Senate 150th Anniversary Medal which our Executive Director, Brendalee Piironen received. On the evening of the 24th, Brendalee gave a presentation on the European River Boat cruise that she had been on in October.
The Roxton Singers entertained residents in the main living room on the evening of the 27th. A Christmas Happy Hour was held on the evening of the 29th to honour our over two hundred volunteers. Thank you to all our volunteers for your devotion to our Home. On the afternoon of the 30th, Johanne Mccinniss gave an amazing vocal and harp concert in the main living room.
Welcome to Phyllis Pratt and Madeleine Bigaouette. Also welcome to Liliane Pinard who is spending a bit of time with us. Best wishes to Haroldine Doyle who spent some time convalescing with us and has now returned home. Our sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Annie Andrews, Carole Driver, Anna Goorts, Mary Wintle, Winnifred Griffith and Jean Harlow who passed away this month.
