Brave souls at Atto Beaver
-19, feels like hockey
The temperature yesterday afternoon in Sherbrooke was -19, feeling like -29 with the wind chill. The cold snap was not enough to keep this hockey crew off the outdoor rink at Atto Beaver park in Lennoxville.
If you look closely, you can see a brand new pair of gloves and a hockey stick that went directly from under the Christmas tree to a test run on the ice.
According to these hockey players, even at frigid temperatures, they will stay on the ice for up to an hour before heading inside to warm up.
The key to staying warm is to keep moving, these hockey players said. They were less comfortable standing still for a picture than they were whipping around the rink.
According to Environment Canada, an extreme cold warning is in effect throughout the week.
Environment Canada suggests dressing warmly in layers that can be removed if too warm; the outer layer should be wind resistant.
Anyone outside for work or leisure activities should watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming.
While an extreme cold warning is in place, temperatures and wind chills create an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
