Mousquiri organizers celebrate 46 years of success
With forty-six successful years under their belt, organizers of this year's Mousquiri Atom hockey tournament decided it was time to celebrate such an outstanding record. Last Saturday, January 27, the group chose to present an evening of music and fellowship at the Centre d'arts here in Richmond, just two days before upwards of seven hundred Atom hockey players began the oldest national Atom hockey Tournament in Quebec.
One can only imagine the planning and programming needed to present a schedule that includes Classes A, B, BB and C. During the thirteen days of the tournament teams from across Quebec, Ontario and at least three States south of the border come together to compete. President Guillaume Cayer-richard, in his ninth term of office, heads up an enthusiastic team of organizers supported by over 200 volunteers, many of whom are second generation folks following the example set by parents and/or family members nearly fifty years ago.
This is an organization that does not forget the loyalty of its supporters. Aside from the official program of games, the tournament also includes special events such as awarding Volunteer of the Year Awards. This year the awards went to Michelle Nadeau and Robert Dalton, who are also Honorary presidents of the tournament.
This year, Richmond is proud to welcome three Atom teams to the competition from every corner of Quebec as well as two teams from New Hampshire and one from Pennsylvania. Also important on the program are the finals with the BB'S facing off on Sunday, February 11th. The three other categories play their championship games on February 18.
Another special event, an exhibition of photos, will give visitors to the exhibition hall at the Centre d'arts a glimpse of the history of this outstanding and popular event. The exhibition opens Saturday, February 3, and will continue until February 18.
Tickets and programs are available at various locations in Richmond or at the door where folks can also find souvenirs and enjoy refreshments or a snack. The official opening is Friday, Feb. 9th with a special appearance and presentation by Sherbrooke University's Drumline Corps beginning at 6:30 or as soon as the current game ends. Usually this event draws a full house with the flags marched in by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15, the 'red' carpet traditional introduction of VIPS, prayers in French and English by Atom hockey players and the usual 'dropping the puck', team introductions and of course, the president's address.
Admission is reasonable with special rates for youngsters and a tournament pass is also available. Parking is free.
