TBL should not consider building an indoor pool
In the last two editions of BCN “TBL pool project” there were a couple articles written by Ann Davidson. In the Jan. 23 edition, she states that, “Many citizens had previously signed a petition based on erroneous information and that some felt that they had been coerced into signing.” The petition was very short and direct, to short to include anything “erroneous info.” It might be helpful if there were “any coerced” individual, if such a citizen(s) existed perhaps identify themselves, otherwise it would have to be considered as thirdhand information, which would be the same as me saying, I am being told that many who are signing Ms. Brown’s petition, actually have no interest in a pool but want to be/stay friends with the mayor and Ms. Brown. The article goes on to mention that many from other areas e.g., West Bolton, are interested and are signing Ms. Brown’s petition. That would be like me signing a petition to have a skate park in Montreal where I or anyone else shouldn’t be signing such a petition in any area where we won’t have a vested interest. John Moreland from West Bolton apparently believes that if the taxpayers in Lac Brome invest in an in-ground pool in Knowlton, it would encourage people to move to Knowlton. My suggestion, build it in West Bolton, get those same people to move there.
In the Jan. 30 edition of BCN, Ann Davidson says others at the pool rally claim that they had been misled when they signed the 1,500-signature petition. Again, who are these mysterious misled/scared individuals? In this same article someone claims that the interest for the pool project was substantiated by a professionally conducted survey managed and supposedly done back in 2005. If that was a fact, and if it really was done 15 years ago, after that amount of time surely there would be more factual information available than has been revealed in the last four years.
When the petition which contained 1,500 signatures was presented to R. Burcombe a year or two ago, the mayor was clear — he refused to give that petition any recognition and at that time continued to try to push that project through. However, once the governments realized that there was so much opposition, they refused to provide funding. Now, Ms. Brown wants only 1,000 signatures and the mayor, who wants the project, says if she gets them he will do what he can to push to resurrect the project. In TBL a 1,500 signed petition by TBL taxpayers has less influence with the mayor of TBL than a petition which may or may not get 1,000 signatures inclusive of non TBL taxpayers. Democracy at work in TBL.
As a point of interest, Ms. Brown and company claim the majority of TBL taxpayers support this project and claim that they would like the citizens to come together for this project. If that were the reality shouldn’t they have set up their online petition and comment page “knowlton.com” in such that they would allow for constructive and cost comparative information about pools, instead of how they did, which blocks those that have been trying to produce the facts, rather than their fake news.
