Career and skills day for local high schoolers a success
The first ever Unlock your Future: Discover opportunities in the Eastern Townships (DO-ET) tour has come to a successful end for the 20172018 school year. Supported by Townshippers’ Association with the involvement of educational and employment partners, the career and skills days connected nearly 700 Eastern Township School Board (ETSB) high school students with information and resources to plan their future.
The goal was to give secondary 4 and 5 students at Alexander Galt Regional, Massey-vanier and Richmond Regional high schools a first-hand look at the opportunities and professions that exist in the region and encourage them to carve out a future in the community.
Four resourceful community members – an executive director, dentist, CEO, and osteopath – opened each event by sharing their stories. Students then followed personalized passports based on their interests, to participate in workshops, career panels and to network with nearly 40 exhibitors. By collecting stamps in their passports, students had a chance to win a prize donated by our event partners.
"The number of donations was overwhelming" stated the project coordinator Jayme Marrotte. "We received t-shirts, sweaters, water bottles, USB keys, gift cards, books and other great items!”
Galt student Owen Dubeau was drawn as the lucky winner of the event’s grand prize, a pair of Montreal Canadian hockey tickets, generously donated by Global Excel Management.
Now that the first DO-ET tour has come to an end, Townshippers’ would like to once again thank everyone who participated and made this event a success. From the participating schools, their support staff, and students, to the community members and local businesses, this event would not have been possible without you.
This project has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada, as well as the ETSB, Cass Funeral Homes, CEDEC (Community Economic Development and Employability Corporation), Lennoxville Youth Center, Global Excel, and Townshippers’ Foundation.
Colour café is expanding!
If the shorter days and cold weather are giving you a case of the winter blahs, put a little colour into it with a playful activity, colouring! As George Bernard Shaw famously said: 'We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.'
Not just for kids anymore, the colouring craze is touted for its ability to ease stress, unleash creativity, and unplug from our tech-obsessed lives. But you don’t have to take our word for it, head to the Colour Café in Cookshire-eaton and find out for yourself!
Hosted by Townshippers’ Association, La Relève du Haut-saint-françois, the Eaton Valley Community Learning Centre and the Centre d’action bénévole (CAB) du Haut-saint-françois, the Colour Café is a cost-free way to relax, meet others and share some laughs.
The Colour Café is now offered at two times and two venues! On the second Wednesday of each month (Feb 14, March 14, April 11) catch the new afternoon sessions from 2-4 pm at La Passerelle Women’s Centre (275 Principale Est,) or join us in the evening, from 6 pm to 8 pm, at the Maison de la Culture John Henry Pope (25 Principale Est).
Bring your own books and crayons (some supplies will be available for new colourers, snacks will be provided, or you can bring your own beverages. There is no commitment needed or experience is necessary, just show up and get colouring!
