It’s been and it continues to be a good old-fashioned winter

- By Louise Smith

February has continued winter’s hold on us. The three snowfalls last week created marshmallow tops on familiar sights. We may be headed for record snowfall levels for the month of February and we are only mid-month! Interspersed with the heavy snowfalls this winter we have had extreme cold spells and then above level temperatures.

As confused as we are about what the weather will be in each seven-day period, imagine the ponderings of the birds and animals in our region. They too must be wondering what is going on.

A possible silver lining will be that the cold spells will have helped to kill off some of the peskier insect larvae. Maybe we will have a relatively bug-free summer. If so, then this good old-fashioned winter will have been worth the journey.
