An Open Night

-

It was a clear night when the members of the Sherbrooke Snow Shoe Club met for their weekly meeting on Wednesday, January 24th. The temperature was cold, though not bitterly frigid, thus allowing some outside physical activity in the form of snowshoeing and snowwalking.

President Gordon Barnett called the meeting to order at the appointed time and welcomed everyone in attendance. Following the singing of the national anthem and the blessing by Past President/2nd-vice Harry Brown, the White Knights set about serving the evening meal. Starting off with bowls of corn & bacon chowder, entrees of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and beans were then passed out. The dessert serving consisted of apple coffee cake with cream.

After the usual expressions of gratitude, drawings were held for the evening’s door prizes. These went to two longtime members of the club, Ashford Lothrop and Walter Enslin. In the case of the latter, his third win this season.

The club’s usual jokester was not forthcoming on this particular occasion, so a request went out to member Gerry Mcnab who recounted a moose hunting experience up north with fellow member Bill Lyon. Apparently, the two would-be hunters failed to distinguish between a fake decoy and the real thing. Had the object of their attention been a living animal, it surely would not have survived the assault, given the amount of lead imbedded into his hide! To say the least, the owner of the decoy was not overly impressed.

The traditional sing-along was then conducted by club chorister Phil Kerwin, assisted ice by Gerald Parent and Gary Macdonald, with musical accompaniment by Janis Graham.

President Gordon then convened a business meeting, the highlight of which was the discussion of operating procedures and the question of raising weekly fees.

The business of the club thus concluded, club secretary Steve Moore displayed a number of images with respect to the club’s early relationship with the now destroyed Magog House on Dufferin Street. Token prizes were handed out to those members able to correctly answer queries regarding the club’s association with the once notable institution.

The presentation concluded, the members socialized and/or enjoyed a few games of volleyball before heading for home.
