Sherbrooke Record

Sports Night

-

On an evening not unlike the previous gathering, members of the Sherbrooke Snow Shoe Club met for their weekly meeting on Wednesday, January 31st.

As the members took up their seats in the rear dining hall, one could not but help notice that adherents of the Red Party had regained their senses by opting to sit next to each other as normal members of a fraternity are apt to do. This was in contrast to recent attempts by these individuals to sit apart from one another in the feeble attempt to give the appearance of a greater accounting of party membership.

Following the call to order and greetings by President Gordon Barnett, the members rose to sing the national anthem. It must be noted though that the anthem was sung with the usual wording rather than the newly approved politically correct version which the Canadian senate had authorized just hours before. It is doubtful that anyone in the room was cognizant of the change nor likely to have accepted the new wording had they known. Given the mean age of the membership, it may be some time before the new version comes into play at the SSSC.

The blessing having been delivered by Harry Brown, the club’s White Knights subsequently began distributing the evening meal. Having delivered bowls of minestrone soup, the Knights went on to serve entrees of beef Bourguignon. Dishes of raspberry pudding topped off the meal.

The dining nearly completed, drawings were held for the evening’s door prizes. Sergeantat-arms Brian Heath won again, his second time in three weeks. He was succeeded by fellow member Lenny Beland.

Past President Dave Moore then offered up some amusing anecdotes for the pleasure of the membership. These included a tale of a plane departing Kennedy airport, a teenager and his ministerial father, and some walking saints.

Following the sing-along involving members Phil, Gary and Bill of musical fame, President Gordon conducted a business meeting to discuss current club affairs, including issues raised at the previous meeting.

In lieu of recent concerns regarding fire precautions at the clubhouse, club secretary Steve Moore asked who among the membership could identify the number of hand-held extinguishers placed about the building. Only one member could answer correctly, that being brother Dave. Ironically, none of the members of the club’s building committee could respond correctly.

At this point in the proceedings, control was handed over to sports guru Brian Heath who had set various games of skill about the main hall. While most tested one’s physical prowess, still others involved estimation and identity recognition. All in all, prizes were awarded for individual as well as team success, the prizes taking the form of homemade treats prepared by Brian’s better-half Pat. Tasty as always!
