Merry House smashes fundraising target
The fundraising campaign to support the revitalization of Magog’s Merry House surpassed its objective by raising $1.34 million, 34 per cent beyond the target.
The results were revealed last Monday with Mayor Vicki-may Hamm emphasizing the "hard work" of those who worked on the ground to collect donations.
Hamm commented on the enthusiastic response of Magog residents and pointed out that the fundraiser’s success would allow "a little room for maneuver," in completing the project.
The fundraiser collected $10,000 from the general public in addition to the $1 million from the municipality and government grants of $1.5 million
According to Councillor and Culture Committee Chair Diane Pelletier, work on the estate is proceeding well, despite complex structural work required. The entire building, which dates from 1821, has had to be reinforced. Despite a slight delay, plans are for the House to open to the public this June.
Workers are currently installing electricity and plumbing and the placement of exterior cladding made of wood, cedar and metalwork is planned in the coming weeks.
The Merry House Corporation is holding its first annual general meeting on April 21 at the Magog Community Center. For the occasion, the organization will officially announce the anticipated opening date and the program for 2018. Citizens are also invited to get involved by becoming members through the website misonmerry.ca.
