Another successful Kub Kar rally for the 1st Lennoxville Scouts
The Hut was packed on Saturday for the 1st Lennoxville Scouts annual Kub Kar Rally. Close to 70 participants from the beavers, cubs and scouts, including leaders, participated in the event, a long-running tradition for the local troop.
The high-tech track was set up, complete with cameras and screens capturing photo finishes and recording the speeds of each car or truck entered in the race. According to the readouts, the speeds of the vehicles, all made by the participants, were reaching simulated speeds of up to 330 km/h.
Former scout leader David Price was on hand to see the races on Saturday. He built many a kub kar with his son years ago when the tradition first began.
“It used to be at Lennoxville Elementary School,” Price said, back in the 1970s and 80s. There was a homemade wooden track that started on the stage. “That was our hill,” he explained. He remembered having one leader to release the cars and one at the end to keep a close eye on who crossed the finish line first.
Eventually, Price and some other scouts supporters with a knack for wiring rigged up some micro switches to break ties that were too close to call.
“It’s a really great father/son, father/daughter activity,” Price commented, impressed by the designs of the cars today and the state-of-the-art racetrack.
For over a decade now, The Hut has been sponsoring and hosting the local troop’s Kub Kar Rally.
The track is run down the centre of the room and spectators sit on either side to watch the cars race by and cheer for their favourite.
In addition to the races, the 1st Lennoxville Scouts also handed out certificates to leaders who have been helping with the troop for five years.
