On Wednesday, February 21st, members of the Sherbrooke Snow Shoe Club gathered for their weekly meeting at their clubhouse in the city’s north end. Although a regularly scheduled meeting, it was a special occasion as the members’ female companions were invited to attend as well. Normally, Wednesday meetings are restricted to members only, but sometimes, the ladies are included when the nature of the evening’s presentation is suitable to both men and women.
After a relatively warm afternoon, the temperature at meeting time was still above freezing. The inviting atmosphere of the clubhouse’s interior was matched by the prevailing warm spell as both members and their ladies mingled in proximity of the old fireplace.
As everyone took their seats in the rear dining hall, club president Gordon Barnett welcomed the attendees, especially the ladies. He said their presence added to the décor and enhanced the room’s atmosphere.
Following the singing of the national anthem, Past President/2nd-vice Harry Brown identified the emergency exits. Reverend Dr. Deane Moffat asked the blessing.
The White Knights then proceeded to serve the evening meal, starting off with cabbage & noodle soup. Then came entrees of turkey à la king, before servings of blueberry squares were passed out.
With expressions of gratitude completed, drawings were held for the door prizes, with Past President Bill Lyon and Helen Cox the lucky winners. A separate drawing for the head table’s floral arrangement went to Elsie Moore.
Club jokester Dave Moore recounted a few anecdotes for the pleasure of the crowd, including a tale about a genie on the beach, one regarding a multi-lane highway to Hawaii, and last but not least, the story of a pastor’s wife.
Club chorister Phil Kerwin then led the traditional sing-along assisted by various members, including Don Parsons, Gary Macdonald, Steve Moore and Lawrie Sakamoto. After the usual collective singing of various tunes by all the attendees, Phil led a special solo performance by those individual members identified standing at the microphone in singing “Over the Rainbow”.
After a short break, President Gordon introduced the guest speaker, Randi Hetherington. Ms. Hetherington proceeded to offer a slide show regarding the ‘Eden Project’ in Cornwall, England. The project, which was designed to reclaim the landscape adversely affected by industrial use, involved the construction of interconnected biomes. Within these structures, a variety of plant habitats were created which are self-sustaining, enabling a repurposing of an otherwise abandoned landscape.
The presentation completed, President Gordon thanked Ms. Hetherington on behalf of the membership and guests, presenting her with tokens of appreciation.
The attendees then prepared for the ride home.
