March Merriment

As March begins, we get hints of Spring and Summer that are on their way. It is a time for us at Grace Village to take advantage of warming weather by getting outside more and by celebrating all the beauty and opportunity that Spring has to offer. March is our most activity-packed month yet, with many creative pursuits like making St. Patrick’s Day centerpieces and Paper Daffodils, as well as a new bi-weekly Art Exploration activity. There is also a big focus on fun and friendly competition with events like Carnival Games, Name that Irish Tune, and Tabletop Badminton Balloon Bowling (Curious? Spring is a great time to try something new!). The end of the month will bring a focus on new growth as we begin a vegetable garden and have a Spring Animal Petting Zoo. Some new groups will be starting like the Grace Village Weather Reporting Group, the Walking Club, and the Grace Giving Back group which will focus on giving back to the community around us. Celebrations of family and friendship are the big focus in March as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a Family Pancake Breakfast and celebrate Spring and Easter with a community Maple Sugar Celebration! Both events require an RSVP. As always, we have our many regular events like Carpet Bowling, Bingo and Joanie & Friends ready to greet you every week with a smile! Let’s enter March with merriment in our hearts!

February Recap

Love, friendship, learning, and community spirit was in the air this February at Grace Village. Residents were invited to enjoy a Family Valentine’s Lunch in the Grand Hall complete with lasagna, Caesar salad, French bread, and red velvet cake for dessert. We were pleased to be able to host the Sherbrooke Connection group for their monthly meeting where residents got a sneak peek at the wonderful costumes for an upcoming production at Bishop’s University entitled Tom Sawyer. On Valentine’s evening we had a special supper for our couples in our Assisted Living wing to celebrate their years together, complete with romantic atmosphere and tasty food. Our monthly Birthday Bash was a hit as we gathered to celebrate ten birthdays with music by the Late Bloomers and a cherry dessert in honour of National Cherry Pie Day. We spent a few weeks cheering on Canada in the winter Olympics and eagerly keeping track of medal counts in the Bistro, we even had some Olympic games of our own where our competitive spirits came out and there was a lot of laughter. We had an old friend of Connaught, Ron Phendler, come in and share some special music with us. We enjoyed listening as he taught us about the history and function of different types of guitars, especially the resonator guitar and ukulele. Continuing our month of learning and knowledge, we also enjoyed an Arm Chair Travel activity where Andrea Eastman shared on her experiences in Haiti, where we were able to learn more about the country and try some Haitian food. Finally, on the last day of the month, many of us came out and enjoyed a workshop on Compression Stockings to learn about the many benefits they offer for people of all ages. With all these events and activities, we finished off the month of February with full hearts and minds, ready for what March has

to offer. Most of you know that it is tradition to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day (or get a pinch from a friend), but did you know… - Corned beef and cabbage are common staples of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

- St. Patrick is credited for driving the snakes out of Ireland, however, many biologists maintain that there never were any snakes in Ireland to begin with.

- The first St. Patrick’s Day parade in North America was in New York City in 1762! - Legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. Shamrocks are now the national flower/emblem of Ireland and a common symbol for St. Patrick’s Day!
