- Record Staff

Thanks to the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), funding in the amount of $ 140,619 was awarded to seven organizations supporting seniors in the Comptonstanstead constituency to purchase, replace equipment or renovate with the goal of putting community projects into action.

The announcement was made yesterday at the Weedon Community Centre by Marie-claude Bibeau, Member of Parliament for Compton-stanstead and Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.

The NHSP promotes positive aging by supporting volunteerism among seniors and encouraging them to take an active role in their community. The program strengthens the well-being of

seniors and enables them to maintain social connections and pass on their knowledge, skills and experience.

Eligible organizations can receive up to $25,000 in project funding.

The organizations selected in the Compton-stanstead riding were the Elie Carrier Community Centre in the Coaticook MRC - $ 24,290 for the replacement of countertops, lighting and ceiling tiles; Weedon Community Centre - $ 22,909 for the renovation of the exterior main entrance; Weedon's Upper St. Francis Women's Centre - $ 6,993 for their project J’embarque dans les technologies; Massawippi Retirement Communities (Sherbrooke) - $ 22,093 for a special project; Beebee Golden Age Club (Stanstead) - $ 14,428 for renovations and security work; Saint-joseph-des-monts factory (La Patrie) - $ 24,096 to cement the floor of the church cellar ; the Municipality of Stoke - $ 25,000 for the installation of an exercise route for seniors.

According to Marie-claude Bibeau, the New Horizons for Seniors Program is unique in that it funds projects developed by and for senior citizens in the region. “They will therefore be able to enjoy a greater choice of activities and services adapted to their needs and interests," she commented.

The projects were approved through the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) 2017–2018 call for proposals for community-based projects, which was open from May 10, 2017, until June 23, 2017.

Through 2017-2018, the Government of Canada will provide approximately $35 million in NHSP funding for more than 1,880 community-based projects.

Since 2004, the NHSP has approved close to 21,600 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada. The Government of Canada has invested approximately $452.5 million.
