Bertrand-fabi traffic study recommends installation of lights

- Record Staff

Astudy by the City of Sherbrooke on the current state of traffic circulation on Bertrand-fabi St. is recommending a number of steps in the short and long term to improve conditions on the street, including the installation of new traffic lights. The recommendations come in light of significant home development along the street.

The Bertrand-fabi sector is currently home to about 2,200 housing units, but short-term residential development plans will see 710 new units built over the next three years, with 1,380 expected over the next ten and 515 more in the years to follow. Recognizing that the construction will mean that the local population will more than double, and that the entire sector relies on the Bertrandfabi axis to get around, the study recommends a number of changes along that route over the coming decade.

In the short-term, the city is looking at redeveloping the Bertrand-fabi / Léger and Bourque / King Street West intersections as well as Comtois St. and its intersections with Bertrand-fabi and King West. Short-term reccomendation also include the addition of traffic lights at the intersection of Bertrand-fabi and Des Vétérans Blvd / Colbert St as well as

the removal of stop signs at the intersection of Charny and Bertrand-fabi streets and the creation of a new link between Bertrand-fabi Street and Rue du Haut-bois.

The study also makes several medium and long-term suggestions, including the addition of traffic lights at the intersections of Bertrand-fabi and Andrémathieu, Bertrand-fabi and Henri-bourassa / Mills streets as well as Bertrand-fabi and Émery-fontaine / chemin du Curé streets. Longer term goals also include the creation of a link to Bourque Blvd for the new residential neighborhood located on Saint-roch Rd South and adding traffic lights at the intersections of Bertrand-fabi and Charlemagne streets and Bertrand-fabi and Saint-roch South.

The City Council passed a resolution to implement the proposed recommendations as permitted by the municipal budget in coming years.
