Local businesses honoured for health and safety innovation
Three local businesses received Health and Safety prizes at a ceremony held in Sherbrooke Wednesday morning, recognized by the Standards, Equity, Health and Safety Commission (CNESST) for achievements in the Innovation.
The winning initiatives all help prevent accidents, and pehaps, save lives.
Ferme Pério - Left turn sign 150 meters
To reduce the risk of collisions between farm tractors and other motorists, an orange and fluorescent temporary traffic sign has been designed. The panel is installed 150 m from the field entrances, only when the tractor is on the road. The sign, which reads "In 150 meters, left turn", catches the attention of motorists, who then avoid passing inside this zone.
Niedner High pressure test service for fire hoses
The high-pressure hydrostatic testing station has been completely redesigned to protect workers from possible explosions and scattering of parts. Thanks to the installation of a fixed guard, removable protectors with coded magnet sensors, a protective cabin with safety mats, and a double zone safety scanner, workers now carry out their tests safely.
Université de Sherbrooke - Mobile camera support
In order to allow the movement of surveillance cameras installed on the roofs of the university, a mobile support system has been created. When a camera has to be repaired or serviced, the support, with a range of 3 metres, allows the camera to approach the worker. This innovation eliminates the risk of falling and reduces response time, in addition to eliminating the costs and delays associated with the rental of a hydraulic bucket, as well as the installation of very expensive anchors.

The three winners are now in the running for the Provincial Health and Safety Gala grand prize, which will be held in Quebec City in the spring of 2019.
