Coaticook Youth Committee takes form

- Record Staff

During the municipal election campaign, then aspiring mayor Simon Madore made a promise to set up a youth committee for the town of Coaticook. Now in office, Madore made his promise a reality at the end of March when 15 young people between the ages of 13 and 25 with an interest in politics gathered together for the first time

A second meeting was held in midapril, and ideas began to emerge from all sides. For 2018, the committee’s goal is to set up a summer activity that will probably take place on July 14, and another during the winter. They would also like the committee to provide an infrastructure that meets the needs of young people.

At that same meeting, a board of directors was elected. The presidency was entrusted to Frédéric Jubinville, a man in his twenties working as an animator at Coaticook’s Maison des Jeunes. Sandrine Gagné will serve as vice-president, Marie-ève Pariseau as treasurer, Félix Roy as director over 18 and Fannie Chevarie as director under 18. The other members will all be directors, and be accompanied by the Mayor, Councilor Guylaine Blouin, and the municipal Communications Director.

The Coaticook municipal council of has established a budget of $5,000 for the youth committee, whose members are responsible for how the budget will be spent. The Council also plans to allocate time during its workshops so that the committee chair can discuss the needs, preferences, and wishes of the city’s youth.

"I am very happy that the youth committee has taken off,” said Mayor Madore. “The young people are very motivated and they are committed to developing things in their city.”
