Cycle of giving and receiving continues at 43rd MVHS awards

- By Matthew Mccully

The annual Massey-vanier High School Scholarship and Bursary Fund Awards night is a reminder of the level of support shown to students by the community.

On Wednesday night, 54 promising students from MVHS received over 130 scholarships, bursaries, prizes and awards.

Among them were several memorial scholarships in the name of distinguished past graduates, some of whom accomplished great things while others showed tremendous promise but died too soon.

Local businesses and community organizations also showed their support through donations, as did towns and municipalities through a number of bursaries.

Two pages in the ceremony’s program included awards from Eastern Townships Educators past and present.

Principal Julie Edwards prefaced the ceremony with a brief speech.

“Great opportunities to help others seldom come. But small ones-small ones, they surround us each and every day,” Edwards said.

“Together, we get to celebrate the giving and receiving of help that is so important in the lives of our students, and from year to year we watch as the cycle of giving and receiving continues,” she went on.

“So to the donors, thank you for helping the students of Massey-vanier continue in their educational goals. And to all of you students, remember this cycle, and when your opportunity comes, no matter how small-you help someone who needs it, and continue the cycle.”

The recipients and donors had an opportunity to meet before the ceremony and get to know each other.

This year, The Record presented the Charles Bury Bursary to Owen Eland, from Abercorn.

Eland plans to attend Dawson College next year and study psychology. His hobbies include baseball and boxing, and he was also involved with the drama department during his time at MVHS.

The Record would like to congratulate Eland and the other graduates and award recipients from MVHS this year and wish them well in future endeavours.
