New Sherbrooke park honours dedicated volunteer
The City of Sherbrooke has officially inaugurated a new neighborhood park in the Virginie-laflamme sector of the Borough of Fleurimont to honour dedicated volunteer Diane-vaillancourt.
"Diane-vaillancourt Park is the second neighborhood park we are inaugurating this year,” said Sherbrooke Mayor Steve Lussier. “It is very important for the members of the municipal council to offer these spaces to the people of Sherbrooke so that children can have fun and meet other young people in the area."
The park, with an area of 2,574 m2, required an investment of $190,000 and includes two play areas - one dedicated to children from 2 to 5 years old and the other to children from 2 to 12, each with swings. The park will also offer a rest area incorporating street furniture and a book drop. People will be able to exchange books once read and discover new ones. Landscaped borders, trees, shrubs, and sidewalks will complete the picture.
"This new park will be a meeting place for families in the neighborhood and will certainly contribute to the vitality of the area," added Desranleau District Councilor Danielle Berthold.
The project was developed under the theme, "the party comes to the park" to highlight the involvement of Diane Vaillancourt in several of the City’s festive activities including the Yvon Pif Despatie Tournament and the Carnaval de Fleurimont along with her involvement in the activities of the Red Cross and Caritas Estrie. Vaillancourt was also a member of the founding committee of Novice-o-rama, a regional hockey tournament organized for beginners.
"Ms. Vaillancourt left her mark in the Fleurimont community,” said Toponymy Committee Chair Paul Gingues. “Her actions have inspired many people who give their time to help others every day.”
