Adoption blitz sees SPA find homes for 133 mature cats

- Record Staff

The Eastern Townships SPA smashed a record for cat adoptions over the weekend with 133 cats finding homes during its three-day “Operation Adoption” drive. This total represents an all-time record for the agency, topping last year's record of 95 cats finding a new family.

"In the wake of the recent over-abundance of cats housed at the SPA shelter, where more than 200 cats were in our legal custody, we organized, in partnership with 102.7 Rouge FM and 1st Choice, a special activity to promote the adoption of our adult cats for July 5, 6, and 7“, said SPA spokesperson, Geneviève Cloutier. “These are cats who are often abandoned in favour of kittens. Potential new owners were offered free food as well as a discounted adoption fee of just $80 that covers sterilization, vaccination, de-worming, and microchip implant. Increased awareness of the benefits of opting for an adult cat and a variety of choices has made this event a great success - an incredible success.”

This event has allowed the SPA Estrie to recover an uneasy equilibrium, but the problem has not been solved as there are currently 125 cats still in SPA custody.

"Since summer is the peak season at the shelter, we will be busy over the next few days, recalling several cats that are currently in foster families," said the spokesperson. Once sterilized, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped, these cats will head to the adoption room."
