Archdiocese opens Catholic youth centre
The rectory of Saint-esprit Church located on Galt Street West in Sherbrooke, will now serve as a gathering place for young Roman Catholics. The Archdiocese of Sherbrooke has set up a Catholic student chaplaincy, called the Newman Center, which will open this Sunday, September 2, at 4 p.m.
The meeting place will allow post-secondary students to discuss their Christian faith, contemporary culture, their quest for meaning, and to share their questions.
Conferences and special events will also be organized.
"It is important for young Catholics today to be able to come together,” said project coordinator Caroline Dostie. “This place will allow young believers to break their isolation by meeting other young people like them."
During the past year, a student center was developed in the Université de Sherbrooke as three distinct Catholic groups each proposed a variety of activities.
The Archdiocese of Sherbrooke recognized the relevance of providing a meeting place adapted to youth. The student chaplaincy will make it possible to put everyone’s strengths together and promote exchange.
In the multi-room space, young people will have access to a living room, a kitchen, a dining room, and a study room. Various partners will take turns providing a permanent presence at the chalpaincy to welcome and guide young people in attendance.
The Newman Center was named in honor of Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman, an English bishop, who died in 1890, and who founded a Catholic university and schools. He was known for his kindness with his students.
