No Homecoming wins for the Gaiters but another historic tie for women’s rugby

It was a busy one on the Bishop’s University campus as the Gaiters hosted five sports games over the weekend on Coulter Field. Although no team could bring back a Homecoming win, the women’s rugby team tied with their rivals Mcgill Martlets, the Gaiters’ only result of the weekend.

The men’s lacrosse team met with Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association’s number one team in the East, and arch-enemies, Mcgill Redmen on Thursday, September 27, to start off the weekend. The Gaiters (3-0-4), who now stand fourth in the league, could not fight off the Redmen (6-0-0), and fell 137. Led by Mathew Paterson with three goals, the Gaiters will be facing the Redmen once again on Saturday, Oct. 13 in Montreal.

Kicking off Friday’s triple header, the women’s rugby team faced the Mcgill Martlets and tied 26-26, the team’s second result in almost 10 years. The lady Gaiters had lost every single game they played since the fall of 2009, up until last weekend when they tied 31-31 against the Montreal Carabins. Quinsea Mckenna scored the Gaiters’ first try as Erika Scott led the team with three tries. The women’s rugby team will be travelling to Ottawa on Monday, Oct. 8 to face the Gee-gees.

Moments later, the men’s rugby team faced Mcgill but could not hold off the Redmen’s offense. The Gaiters fell 29-15 despite tries by Patrick Currie and Tyler Murphy, who also completed two conversions and a penalty kick. Mcgill (2-00) took over second place as the Gaiters (2-1-0) fell to third. The Bishop’s team will be hosting number one Concordia next Friday, Oct. 5, on Coulter Field.

Closing off Friday night, the women’s soccer team fell 3-0 against Université de Laval. The Rouge et Or’s defense was too strong for the Gaiters, Lindsay Moore and Kayla Kyle kicking the only two shots on goal versus Laval’s 15 shots. The loss brings the Gaiters down to the eighth and last place in the RSEQ. The women’s soccer team will be facing number seven team Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or tonight in Sherbrooke.

The Homecoming sports events ended on Saturday, Sept. 29 as the football team faced Mount Allison on Coulter Field. The Mounties (2-0-3) beat the Gaiters 18-10 in front of more than 1,500 attendees in Lennoxville. Stephen Casey gave Bishop’s (0-0-5) its only touchdown of the weekend. The Gaiters will be flying off to Halifax to play the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Outside of Homecoming festivities, the Bishop’s men’s basketball team flew to the Maritimes for the weekend for three pre-season games hosted by the Acadia Axemen. They won 76-72 over Acadia on Friday but lost 107-66 to Carleton on Saturday and 87-76 to St. Francis Xavier on Sunday.
