Knowlton Literary Festival

Showcasing local writers and their works

- By Frank Johnson Main

It may be the water, it may be the air. But something in and around Three Pines is certainly nurturing some wonderful writing and creativity. And that doesn’t just include New York Times bestsellers!

That is the message that the Knowlton Literary Association is underlining again this year, when it kicks off the ninth annual Knowlton Literary Festival with An Evening with Local Authors at the Brome Lake Community Centre ( 270 rue Victoria, Knowlton) on Thursday, October 11 at 7 p.m.

This year’s lineup will again display eight talented writers from the area (or with deep roots in our region), including Benny Beattie, Maurice J.O. Crossfield, Eva Echenberg, Anne Fortier, Isabelle Lafleche, Morri Mostow, Jim Napier, and Rob Paterson. Subject matter will run the gamut from poetry to crime fiction, world travel, romance, writing for adolescents, e-publishing, and biographical non-fiction.

The evening will build on the highly entertaining and informative format introduced at last year’s festival, which showcased the talents of 12 local writers in one of the true highlights of the weekend. This year’s festival continues the format, while focusing on eight writers to allow more time for each of the speakers.

The program will feature two 45minute sessions, in which four of the writers will be interviewed briefly, short excerpts will be read by each of the writers from one of their chosen works, followed by informal time during which guests can mingle with the various guest speakers over cheese and a glass of wine. Each writer will have a table displaying their published works, at which books can be purchased and signed, and where the writer will be available to answer any questions.

While the festival’s profile obviously stems from its success in attracting top Canadian writers to the region each year, it also introduces published children’s and adolecents’ writers to local students, and provides writers’ workshops for residents interested in honing their own writing and creative skills.

An Evening with Local Authors goes one step further, addressing another of the festival’s equally important objectives . . . to showcase, promote, and encourage local writers and their works. Our region is home to a growing community of creative talent, be they artists, writers, or crafts folk. The festival is an important step in acknowledging, encouraging, and promoting this vibrant element of our community.

The evening is open to anyone interested, and is free of charge.

More information on the evening and the writers involved (and the overall festival itself) is available on-line at www.knowltonliteraryfestival.ca.
