What Remembrance Day means to me

-

Remembrance Day means remembering all the soldiers who fought and died for our freedom. They must have had a horrible time, out there on the battle field, away from their families and loved ones, watching people die right before their very eyes and waiting for it all to end. Remembrance Day means guns, cannons, tanks and bombs. It means soldiers, pilots, nurses and doctors.these days, when the wars are over and when there is peace, Remembrance Day means poppies, monuments, parades, special services honoring the soldiers and veterans of the wars and the two minutes of silence.

It means visiting Flanders Fields, reading the names on the hundreds of white crosses, imagining where and how they died and remembering their bravery.

Since the wars have ended, it’s up to us to remember the sacrifices that the soldiers made for our country and for us.

It has been said that “Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it.”

We must pass on to future generations that freedom shouldn’t be taken for granted because many lives were lost fighting for it.

My great uncle was lucky enough to serve our country in World War II and come home to his family when it ended.

But many people weren’t as lucky as him.

So every year on November 11th at 11:00 a.m., we should all remember our long-ago relatives who fought for and gave us this freedom that we have today.

Thinking about how all those Canadians left their families and risked their lives to serve their country and to bring freedom for our generations to come makes me truly proud to be Canadian.
