Lantern festival bringing “the latin spark” to Sherbrooke this fall

- By Gordon Lambie

The Théâtre des Petites Lanternes’ annual “Rivers of Light” festival is returning this fall with a little latin flair. Following the theatre company’s successful partnership with the Accès Asie festival in 2018, this year’s festival is taking place in collaboration with the Latinarte Festival and a group of local Latino-quebecois artists to combine the established tradition of a local lantern festival with the culture and creativity of Latin America.

As a part of the new partnership the festival, which takes place this year

from September 23 to the 29, will include a number of workshops and activated that highlight latino-quebecois culture including a round-table discussion, a screening of the film Jericó by Colombian filmmaker Catalina Mesa, and a poetry reading by local latino-quebecois poets.

The events of the “Rivers of Light” festival will takeplace in and around downtown Sherbrooke. As usual, the fesitval is created through an annual partnership with the Labokrackboom circus arts workshop, and the Maison des arts de la parole storytelling collective and as in past years, it will culminate with the “grand deambulatoire,” a massive parade through the streets where participants light the way with their own home-made lanterns and experience a magical array of surprise performances, as well as a night-market at the Marché de la Gare.

The night market and grand deambulatoire will take place on the evening of September 28, starting at 7 p.m. at the Centre des Arts de la Scene Jeanbesré
