Award-winning writer coming to Bishop’s University

-

Irish-canadian author Anakana Schofield will read from her new novel, Bina: A Novel in Warnings as part of the Morris House Reading Series at Bishop’s University in Cleghorn Hall (Mcgreer) on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019.

Schofield’s debut novel Malarky (2012) won the Amazon.ca First Novel Award and the 2013 Debut-litzer Prize for Fiction in the US; it was a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and selected as a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick. This novel was followed by the Giller Prize-shortlisted novel, Martin John (2015), which was also a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Prize and the Goldsmiths Prize in the UK. Her writing and reviews have appeared in The Guardian, The Irish Times, The Globe & Mail, National Post, London Review of Books blog, and The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers, among others.

Schofield’s recent work, Bina: A Novel in Warnings, an unforgettable tour de force in the voice of an ordinary-extraordinary woman who has simply had enough. Through the character of Bina, who writes her story on the backs of discarded envelopes, Schofield filters a complex moral universe filled with humour and sadness, love and rage, and the consolations, obligations, and mysteries of lifelong friendship.

This event is part of Bishop’s University’s Morris House Reading Series, now in its 16th year. The reading will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will be followed by a question period, an informal reception with a book signing, and a meet-andgreet with the author. The event is free and open to all. Books will be made available for purchase.

The Morris House Reading Series brings both established and up-and-coming Canadian authors to read at Bishop's University. Guest writers present their work, answer questions, and meet with the audience during the informal reception that follows. This year’s line-up also includes Kim Thúy, Elise Moser, and several contributors to Water Lines: New Writing from the Eastern Townships of Quebec.
