BU celebrates Women in Sport

Bishop’s University’s Department of Athletics will be celebratin­g Women in Sport during an actionpack­ed weekend with games from all four Gaiters’ female teams in Lennoxvill­e as well as many conference­s and speeches, including a keynote speech by TSN’S Kate Beirness. There will also be a Wall of Distinctio­n ceremony inducting three female alumni.

Pre-registrati­on to the symposium will be held Friday September 20 at 4:30 p.m. and followed by a Meet and Greet. The women’s soccer team will be facing Université du Québec à Trois-rivières at 6 p.m. on Coulter Field.

Registrati­on will take place at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, September 21 followed by a breakfast. The event will officially kick off at 8:30 a.m. and the Women in Sport Symposium will begin in Denver Gym at 8:45 a.m.

The BU Athletics Wall of Distinctio­n Ceremony will be held in Hamel Lounge at 11:45 p.m. Skier Kim Hubner, golfer Alison Murdoch, and soccer player Erin Patrick will be inducted for their performanc­e as Gaiters and alumni.

Hubner was one of the most decorated skiers for Bishop’s and was named BU Female Athlete of the Year three times. She went to the World University Games twice – in South Korea in 1997 and in Slovakia in 1999. For three seasons straight, she topped the Quebec University Individual women’s ski standings from 1997 to 1999.

Murdoch won the Quebec Junior Girls Championsh­ip in 1967 to start off her career as an amateur golfer. Her national success came to fruition in 2002 when she won her first of four Canadian Senior Women’s Championsh­ips. She has since won internatio­nally, capturing the British and Irish Senior events, two Pacific Northwest Golf Associatio­n Senior and Mid-amateur Championsh­ips. She was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.

Patrick was one of the best soccer players to ever don the Gaiters jersey. She was a two-time CIS Second Team Allcanadia­n and a four-time FQSE all-star. She was named Female Athlete of the Year at BU twice and the Female Newcomer of the Year in 1999.

An alumni and friends lunch will follow the induction ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on the TD Terrace.

The women’s rugby team will then face Concordia on Coulter Field at 1 p.m., while the women’s hockey team will host an exhibition game against Stanstead College in the Jane and Eric Molson Arena at 2:30 p.m. The women’s basketball team will then face Cégep Ste. Foy in the Mitchell Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

TSN sportscast­er Kate Beirness will give a keynote speech in Denver Gymnasium at 4:45 p.m. Since 2013, Beirness has anchored the morning loop edition of Sportscent­re. In 2014, she was paired with co-host Natasha Staniszews­lo forming Sportscent­re’s first ever female anchor team. Recently, she has a been a back fill host for The Social on CTV and has appeared on a number of channel affiliates such as CP24, BNN, and CTV News Channel.

The symposium will be hosted Saturday morning for all current Gaiter student-athletes and invited alumni. Speakers include Paralympia­n Nicole Clermont, nutritioni­st Emilie Richard and Bishop’s alumna and internatio­nal multi-sport athlete Laura Crack. All sports games as well as Beirness’s keynote speech are free and open to the public.
