Self-care during COVID-19

- By: Marie-lisa Jolin, Partners for Eastern Townships Health and Social Services, Estrie Network

The current COVID19 pandemic brings with it increased levels of stress and anxiety; we’d like to take this opportunity to share a few self-care tips and ways to adapt our behaviour that can help us to cope better during these challenging times.

One of the most important things to remember during times of high stress is to take care of your body. By eating healthy, exercising and getting consistent sleep your body will be better equipped to manage the changes going on around us. Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body. This could be as simple as creating a new routine for yourself in your new living situation. Adding a bit of structure to your days can help to keep a clear mind and manage expectations for yourself; it’s easy to feel pressure to be extra productive or start new projects as a result of being in this confinement. Give yourself permission to celebrate accomplishing small tasks such as making your bed or starting a new book; create a mental escape by doing activities that allow you to relax and disconnect such as reading, meditating, drawing, listening to music, knitting or any other activity you find joy in.

Another important self-care tip is to stay connected with family, friends, and volunteers in your community. Technology offers several ways to stay socially connected; whether it is through video chat, email, text or over the phone, remember to check in on each other and enjoy each other’s company as often as possible. Try a virtual coffee or tea date with a few of your friends over video chat! Don’t be afraid to reach out to people and ask for help or talk about how you’re feeling; there are many dedicated local community organizations that you can turn to for support. Reaching out to your local community organizations can be a great way to remain connected and aware of what is happening locally. Who knows, it may also be a great way to discover how to get involved in your community!

Lastly, but very importantly, remember to take a break from the news. Even though staying up to date with the current situation is important, getting caught up in the frenzy of the pandemic can have negative effects. Try to catch up on important developments once a day and then move on with your day by doing something you enjoy. Keep in mind that many rumours can circulate on social media and even via news outlets regarding the pandemic, so make sure you are getting your news from a reliable source. We have posted links to information from Canada, Quebec and Estrie on our homepage at Townshippers.org in both English and French for you to consult and share with your own personal networks.

During this time of social distancing, try to look for opportunities that may arise from it. Take this time to slow down and above all, remember that we are all in this together and that feelings of stress and uncertainty are normal. Take care to follow directives from government and healthcare professionals in order to stay safe and keep others safe around you.
