Loans and scholarships and summer jobs, oh my!

- By Phelps Helps Frontier Animal Society

Although the end of the school year has been a challenge, the application process and deadlines for most post-secondary institutions have continued without delay. This has presented a unique problem amongst graduating students who will be studying a vocational training, CEGEP, or university program in the fall. With many local businesses closed or operating at a reduced capacity, the options for student summer jobs have been limited, leaving some students uncertain of how they will pay for school in the fall.

In response, the government recently announced the expansion of the Canada Student Loans Program to help students who have or will potentially lose their summer jobs and who need help paying for tuition in the fall. Loans and Bursaries are a great option for students who need a little extra help paying for school.

For Stanstead area students who are looking for a local summer job, check out the virtual Summer Jobs Workshop on the Phelps Helps Facebook page or contact Compass Coordinator, Elizabeth Courchesne. Students and recent graduates can find tools to build or improve their CV, write a cover letter, and learn about important interview skills. New material is added regularly, including updated jobs available.

Another option for students is applying to local scholarships and bursaries. The Lampe Foundation is dedicated to supporting education by encouraging qualified students from the Eastern Townships and will continue to award scholarships this year. Including two 100$ awards that will be awarded to graduating level 5 students who participate, or have participated, in Phelps Helps.
