Town of Brome Lake reduces taxpayers’ fiscal burden

n this crisis period, the Town of Brome Lake announces the implementation of a tax relief measure, in order to reduce the pressure on its taxpayers’ wallets, both residents and businesses.

At the Council meeting of Monday, May 4, the elected officials ratified the suspension of the interest rate charged when the municipal tax bill, or other bill, is paid late. This measure applies to amounts to be collected between June 1st and September 30, 2020.

Thus reduced to 0%, this means that taxpayers will have a little more than three additional months to pay the balance of their second instalment, which is due on June 17.

“We had to act with the exceptional circumstances that we know,” said Brome Lake Mayor Richard Burcombe.

“The crisis is having an impact on the financial health of some of our citizens and businesses, and this measure will allow them to breathe easier. However, one thing must be made clear: it is important that taxpayers who are able to settle their tax bills do so on the dates normally scheduled.”

Taxpayers who wish to benefit from this relief are responsible for changing the date of their payment if it is already scheduled with their banking institution, while those who have chosen to produce a post-dated cheque can contact the Town at 450 243-6111.

Businesses located in Brome Lake are also being considered. A consultation process will begin shortly, in particular to gauge their opinion on the form of assistance that can be offered to them according to municipal legal constraints.
