Problems piling up for new large garbage collection

out a form indicating what they have available for pick-up. Since the new system was put in place, close to 1,000 people have registered.

Despite this apparent adoption of the new concept, the city issued a reminder on Thursday morning that residents who have registered must wait for a notice indicating when they can put their garbage out. Once they have been informed of the week during which their objects will be collected, residents are asked to put them out only on the Sunday evening before their regular collection day.

“We are currently seeing piles of furniture or other objects in various parts of the city,” said Mayor Steve Lussier. “We do not want people to be fined and that is why we are asking everyone’s collaboration to keep our city clean by using the various means to dispose of our objects, namely re-use organizations and eco-centers.”

To use Sherbrooke’s large garbage collection service, a form must be filled out either on the city’s website or on the phone by calling 819-823-8000. For garbage to be considered a large-item its dimensions must be too large to fit in a roll-out bin and it must fall into a set of specific categories that cannot be otherwise recycled. It is worth noting that items collected in this way go directly to the landfill, so citizens are asked to carefully consider whether items can be reused or recycled in some other way before registering for the service.
