Zebra mussels found in river near Windsor

-

The Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP) discovered the presence of zebra mussels in the Saint-françois River, which runs off the Saint Lawrence River and down to Sherbrooke.

The zebra mussel releases large quantities of dissolved organic matter and increases the probability of bluegreen algae blooms. They are problematic in a number of ways. The mussels are known to infest and clog water pipes.

They can also cause damage to boats, docks and dams. The MFFP created the Programme québécois de lutte contre les carpes asiatiques et autres espèces aquatiques envahissantes in 2016 to combat the spread of invasive species in Quebec’s waters.

The program has contributed to the creation of several detection and monitoring networks in the province. When a known invasive species is identified, the MFFP takes the necessary measures to inform the population in order to increase public vigilance.

This particular species was detected in Memphremagog Lake in 2017. It has since colonized the northern and central part of the lake, and Magog Lake downstream. Once the mussel takes root, it’s nearly impossible to remove.

However, there are preventative measures that can be used to reduce the risk of colonization. The MFFP suggests boaters keep their boats clean to slow the spread of invasive species. Citizens are also invited to consult the ministry website.

The Eastern Townships also established a regional committee to study the distribution of zebra mussels in the

Memphremagog Lake and to detect the species in other nearby bodies of water and streams.

The MFFP has funded more than 40 boat cleaning stations in Quebec. These stations are typically cost efficient for citizens and sometimes free. Boaters are invited to contact boat ramp operators or marinas to check whether they offer the cleaning service.

Citizens can also contact the ministry to report the presence of an invasive species by calling 1-877-346-6763, or by contacting the local office in the area.
