New conductor for the Orchestre symphonique des jeunes de Sherbrooke
Hubert Tanguay-labrosse, conductor of the Orchestre symphonique des jeunes de Sherbrooke since 2015, announced some time ago that this would be his final season with the ensemble, but no one had imagined that the season would end so abruptly.
However, the selection process to find a replacement for him continued as planned and despite some adjustments to take into account in these new times, a quality candidate was selected. As the Orchestra enters its 47th season, Félix Ste-marie will be taking over.
Both pianist and clarinetist, Félix Ste-marie has spent a large part of his career in Sherbrooke. He studied at Sacré-coeur, the Séminaire de Sherbrooke,
Montcalm, and then at the Cégep de Sherbrooke.
He then completed his bachelor’s degree in piano and conducting at the Université de Sherbrooke, under the supervision of Carmen Picard and François Bernier. He even created the Orchestre de chambre étudiant de Sherbrooke, which he conducted for two years before pursuing his master’s degree and a post-master’s certificate with Gilles Auger at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec.
Assistant conductor with the Orchestre symphonique de Lévis since 2017, he completed his training through conducting internships at the Miami Music Festival and Domaine Forget. In the summer of 2019, he was selected to conduct the Orchestre symphonique de Québec as a trainee conductor for part of the concert presented at the Domaine Forget International Festival.
The OSJS is delighted to be able to count on this promising young conductor and to contribute to its development as it encourages the region’s young musicians to discover or deepen the symphonic repertoire, to better master their instrument, and to perfect their art while promoting pleasure and quality. He is full of ideas for moving forward in spite of current constraints, and the Orchestra looks forward to supporting him in this adventure.
