New public water stations installed in Sherbrooke
Working in collaboration with Festivals et événements verts de l’estrie (FEVE), the organization aimed at environmentally friendly event planning in the Eastern Townships, the city of Sherbrooke has installed three new public water stations for hand-washing and refilling water bottles.
The stations are currently deployed at the “urban oasis” on Wellington Street North and at the Julien-ducharme Center in Fleurimont for day camps. FEVE has similar equipment avaialable for rental for event planners or organizations that wish to ensure the presence of a water station on their site.
“In recent years, the City of Sherbrooke has used FEVE’S portable facilities for refilling reusable water bottles bottles during its public activities,” said Steve Lussier, mayor of the City of Sherbrooke, explaining that the new stations were requested as a way of including hand hygiene and public health in the existing effort to reduce the use of single-use bottles.
The city invested $15,000 in making the new water stations available.
“FEVE has been renting equipment for events since 2013, but in the health context relating to COVID-19, a new need has arisen,” said Sophie Valence-doucet, Executive Director of the non-profit organization. “Our mission is to ensure that all types of events can be offered in the most environmentally friendly way possible and we wanted to take up this challenge in order to contribute to the revival of organizations’ activities.”
