Sherbrooke looking for artists to provide summer programming
The City of Sherbrooke has launched a call for proposals for artists and local organizations to create a cultural program in the city’s public spaces this summer. This call for proposals will be used as the basis for a lineup of activities called “the cultural breeze” meant to help give both locals and tourists access to varied arts and culture experiences while also respecting the directives of the regional Public Health Department. Once established, the project will last until Sunday, September
6 2020.
“The Covid-19 context requires us to review the type of programming usually available in our outdoor facilities,” said Paul Gingues, president of the city’s culture committee. “The last few months have also been particularly difficult for our artists, so we have chosen to offer new artistic proposals to our population and at the same time reach out to Sherbrooke artists and organizations.”
Proposals for the new program must be tied to the performing arts but can take many forms, including circus, public entertainment, music, dance, literature, theater and storytelling. With a maximum duration of 45 minutes, the services must inevitably comply with the health measures in force.
Possible sites for accepted activities are the Strathcona square and /or the “urban oasis” on Wellington Street North, the Place Well Sud on Wellington Street South, the pop-up public square at the intersection of Queen and Samuel-grantham streets in Lennoxville, the Alfred-demers and Victoria parks in the Fleurimont borough, the André-nadeau outdoor center, as well as the Nault and Ma-villa parks in the Brompton – Rock Forest – Saint-élie – Deauville borough. Other places may be added in the coming weeks.
Professional and emerging artists as well as artistic organizations and collectives have until 4:30 p.m. on July 30 to submit their applications. The proposal form and all the criteria to be met can be found (in French only) at: sherbrooke.ca/briseculturelle. Interested parties can also call the city’s cultural division at 819 823-8000 extension 5438 for more information.
