On Oct.30 the internationally renowned Montreal orchestra Lengaïa Salsa Brava will launch its second album, titled The Gold Diggers. Influenced by the New York salsa tradition of the 70s, the orchestra offers a cocktail of Latin flavours with this new opus; salsa dura, bolero, boogaloo, chacha. The orchestration of three trombones and a baritone saxophone gives their music a unique identity, with a sound dominated by its dynamic brass section.

Formed in 2012 in Montreal by Guyanese trombonist Giany Huyghues-despointes, the orchestra released its first album in 2018 (IMPACTO), which earned it international fame in the field of new “salsa dura” orchestras. Lengaïa has also accompanied international salsa artists, including Ismael Miranda (Fania All Stars) and Ismael Rivera Jr (son of singer Ismael Rivera, el Sonero Mayor) in 2017, in Montreal. In 2019, Lengaïa collaborated with Jimmy Bosch (Marc Anthony’s former musical director), special guest as a soloist on two songs from the new album: La Nueva Generación and Salsa Dura Hasta la muerte. In 2019, the orchestra completed a tour of Colombia, “The Epiphany Tour” to the hot spots of Colombian salsa in Cali, Medellin and Bogota.

Lengaïa Salsa Brava is a three-time winner of the Canadian Latin Awards in the categories Best Salsa Orchestra of the Year (2017 and 2018) and Best Tropical Song, in 2019.

The new album offers an uptempo, joyful and highly danceable music performed by a group of 12 seasoned Montreal musicians of various nationalities (Colombia, Spain, French Guiana, Peru, Quebec, Dominican Republic, Venezuela).

Of the eleven songs chosen for The Gold Diggers, ten are original compositions, two of which were written by Harold Aguirre (Colombia) for Caminantes and Jesus Ruiz (Venezuela) for Una nueva Venezuela, after they met on tour. They welcome a very special guest, Jimmy Bosch (trombonist and Marc Anthony’s former musical director) on Salsa Dura Hasta la Muerte and La Nueva Generación. The one cover in the track listing, Cuco y Olga by the great Mongo Santamaria, rearranged by the orchestra, suits the essence of the album.

“You can communicate everything through music. In our southern cultures, we laugh at our tragedies and mourn our joys. What seems contradictory is more of a cathartic experience for us, which we translate into music: salsa,”

commented Giany Huyghues-despointes founder, musical director and trombonist.

The showcase and launch of the new album, which will be broadcast on Facebook and YouTube on Oct. 30 at 8 p.m., was filmed at the Plaza Theatre, with three cameras and edited by a team of professionals under the direction of Guillermo Castellanos. The sound recording was captured and mixed by engineer Ricky Campanelli, all to provide a high-quality audio and visual experience for viewers.

Showcase and record launch, October 30, from 8 to 9 P.M.
