Pet of the Week: First pet Utah

- Submitted by the SPCA Monteregie

Here is a picture of me ‘Utah’. I was the FIRST ‘Pet of the Week’ in the Brome County News - November 1st, 2000 - that’s 20 years ago! Two weeks later I wrote a ‘thank you’ note to the newspaper: ‘ Because of your kindness a wonderful family brought me to their home today. I will do my best to make them very happy, which will make me happy too!’ It will always be remembered that the first ‘Pet of the Week’ went to Mystic.

Imagine, 20 years of shelter dogs and cats! Think of how many animals have been helped along their road to a new home by the Brome County News. A HUGE thank you!

How the process has evolved! Way back then, the printed photo had to be dropped off a week before at the Bcnews office in Knowlton so it could go in the ‘courrier bag’ to Sherbrooke and the text was faxed to Sherbrooke! Now life is just zip, zip, zip…

Regardless, all those details are irrelevant to us animals. We just know that lots of wonderful people have helped us along the way to happy endings. THANK YOU to all the people who care.

The Covid-19 mystery: There is a shortage of dogs for adoption at most shelters. Less dogs are being relinquished to shelters - is this good news or bad news? More people are keeping their animals? Are people selling them? ‘Where have all the doggies gone?’ Hopefully they are in good places and being well treated. There are many theories floating around. Is it a combination? Who knows.

However, we do know that there is no shortage of cats and kittens in need of homes!

You humans and your virus: Please get it under control! Please make the necessary sacrifices and control yourselves! Please do all the recommended things! We animals find it so ironic that plain old soap and water is the solution - available almost everywhere! So GOOD LUCK and DO IT!

NEEDED: small to medium dog (under 30 lbs) who is looking for a new home!

Two separate families are ‘in need’ of a new pet because each of them very recently had to ‘put down’ their old companions. Do you know of any dog(s) who are also ‘in need’ of a new home? Please contact 450-242-2892.
