The Association de la fibromyalgie de l’estrie
Together, towards our wellbeing!
The Association de la fibromyalgie de l’estrie is a community organization that was founded in 1993. Its mission is to welcome and support people with fibromyalgia and their families, to recognize their challenges, to offer them a place of belonging and to support them in achieving autonomy and access to wellbeing.
Fibromyalgia is a non-degenerative syndrome characterized by fatigue and chronic pain. The prefix fibro refers to fibrous tissue, myo refers to muscles, and algia refers to pain. These symptoms are often accompanied by other metabolic disorders like migraines, irritable bowel, and certain problems with concentration and memory. Despite advances in scientific research on this subject, fibromyalgia remains difficult to diagnose and treat because there is no lab test or biological marker to get an accurate diagnosis.
The World Health Organization officially recognized fibromyalgia syndrome in 1992 but despite everything, it is still little known and poorly understood in the general population. According to epidemiological studies, fibromyalgia affects between two and ten per cent of the population, or 600,000 to 3 million
Canadians. The vast majority of people with fibromyalgia are women between the ages of 30 and 55, but no one is safe and men, children and the elderly can develop it too.
